25% – The largest desert in the world, the Sahara takes up the bulk of northern Africa… or about 25% of the entire continent! The vast desert runs more than 3,000 miles from end to end, and from between 800 and 1,200 miles from top to bottom. This makes the Sahara approximately 3,320,000 square miles in size. More than a dozen African countries have part or all of their land in the Sahara, including Egypt, Algeria, Niger, and Sudan. Most of us envision the Sahara Desert as an endless expanse of sand sheets and sand dunes, but in reality, sandy terrain only covers about a quarter of the desert.
