Whose statue stands atop Philadelphia’s City Hall?
William Penn – The founder and namesake of Pennsylvania, William Penn stands in bronze form atop Philadelphia City Hall, a city which he dreamed would become the “City of Brotherly Love.” Designed by Alexander Calder in the late 19th century, the statue features Penn in era-appropriate attire holding the Charter of Pennsylvania in his left hand and gesturing with his right hand at the city below him. The dome at the top of the city hall — which stands 548 feet tall — weighs 27 tons and was lifted to its perch in 1894. Calder went on to design 250 more sculptures for the Philadelphia City Hall.:
